Federally outlawed in 1937 during a time known as “reefer madness”, hemp was banned in conjunction with marijuana because the psychoactive element Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) had not yet been scientifically isolated. As a result of the inability to isolate the THC, both hemp and marijuana were banned in the U.S. Fast forward nearly 85 years, government officials finally allowed for the return of the Hemp crop by signing the 2018 Farm Bill Act.
Pennsylvania’s hemp industry can be traced back to its founder, William Penn. When Pennsylvania became a state in 1681, he encouraged all farmers to grow the highly versatile crop. Hemp was utilized in countless fabrics and was even used for rope and sails by many ship builders. Hempseed oil could also be found in paints, varnishes, lacquers, printers’ ink and lamp oil. To this day we continue to find unique uses for this dynamic plant.
When our family first acquired the farm, we knew we had something unique in our old barn. It was like it had a soul, a seasoned voice that spoke to us. Standing tall as a testament to quality, it was built to withstand the harshest of winters and the hottest of summers. Uniquely designed with distinctive louvers that create a whirling breeze, we quickly realized it was ideal for drying our hemp flower. We believe that when the barn was raised in 1858 (prior to Lincoln’s presidency), it was originally used to dry hemp and/or tobacco.
We pay homage to the past (with much hope for the future) by naming our company after it. Hemp 1858 was born with the goal of helping folks lead a happier more enjoyable life. At Hemp 1858, quality is our top priority. We accomplish this goal by using a super-critical CO2 extraction process which has become the benchmark within the industry. The CO2 extraction process yields extremely pure CBD, ideal for our tinctures.
Since our inception, we have been driven to create products that improve people’s quality of life. Over the years our customers have shared many success stories from using our products. We are always delighted to hear from our customers, so, I ask you…… What’s your story?
